Government Client

Background

The constant business encounters for a global company, who specialises in the delivery of essential public services with over 60,000 people working across the world, includes the requirement of a healthcare partner that can deliver the best international standard of care to their employees.

The challenges of operating in a remote environment, like Iraq, puts pressure on companies to align with partners who have skilled, experienced and qualified personnel who can operate 24/7. With their employees facing constant physical environmental pressure, political and security threats and lack of access to western medicine, this conglomerate turned to the healthcare expert of choice in Basra.

MediCorp has successfully done exactly that – taking care of our client’s employees whilst they focus on their core business. And saving the life of a middle-aged Caucasian working in a stressful environment, allowed our client to do just that.

Solution

Arriving at the MediCorp base medical clinic, a male patient, presenting with symptoms of a Myocardial Infarction (heart attack), was immediately attended to by the MediCorp senior EMT on duty. After an initial diagnosis, it was advised that the patient required further hospital care.

The patient indicated that he would prefer a medical evacuation to a hospital in Dubai, which was against the travel advise of the medical personnel. Stabilizing the patient enough for travel is always a priority. The team assisted with the travel and transport arrangements to support the patient request. With close monitoring and constant care, the patient was steadied enough to allow for his transport to the UAE.

On arrival he was diagnosed and moved to the ICU where the necessary medical tests and procedures were successfully completed. Although some damage to the heart muscle was suffered, the medical staff commended the work that the MediCorp team did earlier in the day.

The positive outcome of this situation was still reflected on and some of the lessons learned included:

Time is of the essence – having immediate access to the best possible medical care and early detection of life-threatening symptoms remains key.
Medical evacuation should only be presented as an option if no further medical support can be offered in country or the patient is stable enough to be transported.
Efficient communication between all concerned parties is required to ensure logistics like insurance approvals, flight crew readiness, ambulance transport, patient updates shared with medical teams at the hospital and open lines of communication with next of kin are in place.
